The Missed Approach Point (MAPt) is the point in a non-precision or circling approach at which a pilot must decide whether to proceed with a landing or initiate the published missed approach procedure if the required visual references have not been acquired. It marks the end of the final approach segment and the beginning of the missed approach segment. In precision approaches, a similar decision is made at the Decision Altitude (DA) rather than a specific MAPt.
Purpose
Provide a clear and fixed position for transition to missed approach
Ensure the aircraft can safely climb away from terrain and obstacles if landing is not possible

DME distance from a fix (e.g., “MAPt at 5.8 DME from VOR”)
GPS waypoint (e.g., MAPt = RWY03 threshold)
Time from FAF when no distance or GPS is available
Phraseology Examples
“Approaching MAPt, 1,000 feet, no contact.”
