D-ATIS
Definition
D-ATIS is the digital (data link) version of the Automatic Terminal Information Service (ATIS). It provides pilots with automated, continuously updated aerodrome information in text format, delivered via ACARS (Aircraft Communications Addressing and Reporting System), CPDLC, or other data link systems — instead of traditional VHF audio broadcasts. D-ATIS is especially useful for airline operations, long-haul flights, and high-traffic airports where early access to ATIS reduces frequency congestion and workload.
Purpose
- Deliver real-time aerodrome information in written form
- Reduce radio frequency congestion
- Support pre-landing preparation before reaching VHF range
- Provide precise, readable weather, runway, and operational data
Content of a D-ATIS Message
Typically includes:
- Airport name and ICAO code
- ATIS identifier (e.g., Information Bravo)
- Timestamp (UTC)
- Active runways and operations
- Approach types in use
- Wind, visibility, weather, clouds, temperature, dew point
- QNH (pressure setting)
- Runway conditions (snow, braking action, etc.)
- Notices and remarks
- Instruction to report ATIS identifier on initial contact
How Pilots Access D-ATIS
- Through onboard FMS (Flight Management System)
- ACARS interface (typically on airline jets)
- EFB apps (Electronic Flight Bags) with connected services
- Delivered automatically when within range of the data link ground station
D-ATIS vs. Traditional ATIS
Phraseology Example
“Wien Tower, OE-ABC, with Information Delta”
(Even though it was received via D-ATIS, the pilot must still report the identifier)
Benefits
- ✅ Enables early cockpit preparation
- ✅ Prevents frequency overload at busy airports
- ✅ Reduces errors and misunderstandings from audio transmissions
- ✅ Integrates seamlessly with modern FMS and dispatch systems
