Mountain waves

0 viewsOct 7, 2026

Strong wind across a mountain range sets stable air swinging up and down downwind. Lenticulars mark the wave crests, and just upwind of them a glider climbs in smooth air, far above any thermal.

What you learn

  • Name the three conditions for a mountain wave
  • Picture how the air swings downwind of a range
  • Read lenticulars and the Föhn gap in the sky
  • Find the lift just upwind of each wave crest
