The takeoff

The 172S takeoff as the handbook flies it: check the engine early in the roll, lift the nose wheel at 55 KIAS and climb at 70 to 80 KIAS, then flaps up. Then the short field with flaps 10° and 56 KIAS to 50 ft, and the soft field.

What you learn

• Check the engine in the roll, and know when to stop
• Know the static RPM at full throttle: 2,300 to 2,400
• Lift the nose wheel at 55 KIAS, climb at 70 to 80 KIAS, then flaps up
• Fly a short-field takeoff: flaps 10°, brakes, 56 KIAS to 50 ft
• Fly a soft-field takeoff: nose wheel light, off early, level off
