Taxiway

Definition

A taxiway is a designated path on an aerodrome that connects runways with aprons, hangars, stands, and other operational areas. Taxiways are used by aircraft before takeoff and after landing, allowing them to move safely and efficiently across the ground under their own power.

Purpose

Enable safe and orderly ground movement of aircraft
Connect aircraft to runways, terminals, and parking areas
Support efficient traffic flow during busy operations
Minimize runway occupancy time and delays

Taxiway Identification

Taxiways are identified by letters (A–Z) and sometimes letter-number combinations (e.g., A1, B2).
Standard: Single capital letters (e.g., A, B, C)
Sub-segments: Combination of letter + number (e.g., D1, E2)
Markings: Solid yellow centerlines, optionally with edge markings
Signs: Black letters on a yellow background (directional), or yellow letters on a black background (current position)

Types of Taxiways

Type	Purpose
Parallel taxiway	Runs parallel to the runway for efficiency
Exit taxiway	Leads aircraft off the runway after landing
High-speed exit	Angled taxiway allowing faster runway vacating
Cross taxiway	Connects multiple apron/runway areas
Remote stand taxiway	Connects to remote parking or GAC apron

ATC and Taxi Instructions

All taxi movements at controlled airports require explicit ATC clearance. Taxi instructions include:

Route via designated taxiways
Clearance to cross or hold short of runways
Destination (e.g., holding point, stand, GAC)

Holding Points and Intersections

Taxiways intersect with runways and other taxiways at marked positions
Holding points are where aircraft stop before entering runways
Intersections are managed via signage and controller instructions
Stop bars may be used at critical points to prevent runway incursions

Pilot Responsibilities

✅ Follow taxi route as assigned by ATC
✅ Use airport charts to verify route and position
✅ Read back all runway crossings and hold short instructions
✅ Turn on taxi lights and beacon during movement
❌ Never enter a runway without explicit clearance

Progressive Taxi

ATC may offer or the pilot may request progressive taxi instructions. Useful for:

Complex layouts
Low visibility

Taxiway Safety Tips

Confirm runway crossing instructions verbally and visually
Always use the correct taxiway designator — avoid “winging it”
Stay alert for ground traffic: vehicles, pushbacks, other aircraft
